Founding & Key People

The Global Girmit Institute emerged from earlier academic and community initiatives to preserve Fiji’s indenture history. It was formally launched on Girmit Day, 15 May 2018, in Lautoka, as part of a broader campaign to make Girmit commemoration a national observance. Founding figures include Dr Ganesh Chand, former academic and politician, alongside community historians who saw urgent need to digitise fragile records.

Why it Mattered

For the first time, a dedicated body placed Indo-Fijian indenture history on a permanent institutional footing. Beyond archives, the Institute designed school packs, lectures, and exhibitions—turning memory into curriculum. Its advocacy contributed to the Fijian government’s declaration of Girmit Day as a national holiday in 2023.

Flashpoints & Campaigns

  • Digitisation: Preservation of passenger registers and rare photographs from 1879–1916 voyages.
  • Conferences: Annual Girmit conferences draw regional and global scholars on indenture history.
  • Curriculum advocacy: Submissions to the Ministry of Education to include Girmit in school syllabi.

Today

The Institute operates as a research, museum, and public education hub. It partners with international libraries and diaspora organisations to enrich its collections and conducts outreach to schools across Fiji.

Legacy

The Global Girmit Institute transforms suffering into knowledge. By institutionalising Girmit studies, it safeguards stories of resilience and ensures that the sacrifices of indentured labourers remain central to Fiji’s national narrative.
