Fiji Indian National Congress

Mourning turned into movement. In 1929, Indo-Fijians marked the 50th anniversary of indenture not with celebration but protest — and built a Congress from that conviction.

Founding & key people

Pandit Vishnu Deo pressed for a day of mourning and led the call to form the Congress; black flags and the burning of indenture in effigy signalled a new political mood. S.B. Patel later brokered Suva–Lautoka unity. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

Why it mattered

It gave Indo-Fijians a national vehicle to demand common roll and civil equality after the first Indian elections to the Legislative Council.

Today

The Congress itself no longer exists; its organisational DNA flowed into later bodies (Indian Association, Federation Party, NFP).

Legacy

Established a repertoire of public protest and constitutional argument that defined Indo-Fijian politics for decades.
