Fiji Girmit Council

Memory as power. From the 1979 centenary, the Council rallied organisations to build the Girmit Centre and keep the story of indenture alive.

Founding & key people

Evolved from the Fiji Council of Centenary Celebrations (1979). Community leaders such as Y.P. Reddy and others steered the centre’s development.

Why it mattered

Turned remembrance into a civic project—schools, archives, and anniversaries that teach citizens where Fiji came from.

Flashpoints & campaigns

  • Centenary activities: coins, badges, school packs; building the Girmit Centre in Lautoka.

Today

Works periodically with partners on commemoration and education.

Legacy

Made Girmit part of national heritage, not only community memory.
