Crossing the Kala Pani: Ships & Voyages of Fiji’s Girmitiyas (1879–1916)

Between 1879 and 1916, forty-plus vessels made eighty-seven voyages, carrying about sixty thousand Indians to Fiji under indenture. Below is a narrative overview and a complete, chronological ledger of those journeys — from Leonidas (the first) to Sutlej (the last).

The ocean passage (story)

Recruited in India’s depots, girmitiyas boarded in Calcutta or Madras and sailed south into the Indian Ocean, rounding Australia before turning north-east into the Pacific. Weeks of cramped decks, rationed water, seasickness, births, prayers, quarrels — and the forging of jahaji bhai (ship-brother) bonds — defined the crossing. Fiji’s first transport, Leonidas, reached Levuka on 14 May 1879 and was quarantined offshore due to cholera/smallpox on board. Five years later, the iron ship Syria wrecked on Nasilai Reef near the Rewa delta, the worst maritime disaster in Fiji’s history; villagers launched canoes into surf to save survivors. The final transport, Sutlej, arrived on 11 November 1916 — the end of indenture shipping, though contracts ran to 1920.

“We left as strangers and landed as jahaji bhai — ship brothers and sisters.”
Theme echoed in Indo-Fijian oral histories.
